Dubare is known for its sprawling elephant camp on the banks of the beautiful river Kaveri. Many years ago, the elephants for the spectacular Mysore Dussehra were trained at the Dubare Elephant Camp, and the waters of the river were their primary watering hole. After logging operations ceased, the elephants have retired from the Dussehra and at present, there are around 150 elephants under the care of the Karnataka Forest Department in Dubare. These enchanting beasts show you the kindness behind the untamed beauty of nature, as they interact with you within the vicinity of the camp. At the Dubare Elephant Camp in Coorg, guests can not only observe and learn but also participate in various activities involving elephants. There are also in-house naturalists at hand to enumerate the different aspects of elephant history, ecology, and biology!
Visitors spend over three hours with these beautiful animals and one of the most fun activities is taking part in an elephant grooming session, a wonderful period of bonding with the grey kings and queens of the forest. Watch as these placid creatures have a scrub bath in the flowing waters of the river, with traditional rituals such as oil being applied to their forehead, tusks, and other maintenance. You’ll also learn how to prepare elephant food and how they are fed. The in-house mahouts will also showcase how elephants obey commands and their role during previous logging operations. This is pet care in the wild and it’s a lot of fun!
Elephants are not the only wildlife in this region. The thickets of forests around are also home to gaurs, leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, peacocks, partridges, and more. During the rainy months of July, August, and September, the forest comes to life and the river is swollen with grayish-blue water. During this season, you can go monsoon river rafting down the rapidly flowing Kaveri. Hungry? Stop by the in-house Gol Ghar and feast on delicious non-vegetarian and vegetarian fare that’s served at the camp. You can also request for some tasty local delicacies to be included in the spread!
