History of Dubare Elephant Camp

Dubare Elephant Camp has a long-standing history related to elephants. The camp was originally established as a training centre for the elephants used by the Forest Department of Karnataka. Historically, the elephants from Dubare were trained for timber logging activities. However, in the recent past the government ceased all logging operations. The trained elephants of Dubare also had the honour of participating in the grand Mysore Dussehra festival, a significant cultural event in Karnataka. Every year, the elephants would take part in the traditional procession, representing the rich heritage and culture of the region. At present, there are around 150 elephants under the care of the Karnataka Forest Department in Dubare. The Camp plays a vital role in conserving and protecting elephants. The camp is actively involved in rescuing and rehabilitating elephants, promoting awareness about conservation.

Activities at the Camp

The Dubare Camp offers a range of activities, including elephant interaction, elephant bathing, and safari. The elephant interaction is a unique experience. Visitors can also go trekking in the surrounding Dubare forest, learn about the role of mahouts in elephant care and stay overnight in one of the Dubare Jungle Lodges and Resorts accommodations. 

Kids here will enjoy it the most. In the summer, when the water level is low, visitors to the camp must walk across the river to reach the camp but requires care as the rocks can be slippery. Boats are available to cross the river during other seasons when the water level is higher, but it can be busy, so it's best to arrive early. After bathing the elephants, you will also be able to prepare elephant food and feed them. Mahouts will also show how elephants respond to orders and behave in their previous duty in logging operations. 

River rafting is also available beside the camp at a nominal fee. The Dubare forest is also excellent for bird-watching. Our naturalists will take you on a wildlife Safari in a jeep or a nature walk into the forest, imparting their knowledge of the jungle and all the species that dwell there while also demonstrating and discussing their experiences. 

Dubare Camp Entry Fee, Timings and Safari 

The timings for elephant interaction at Dubare Elephant Camp is from 9 AM to 11 AM in the morning. In the evening, you will be taken to safari in a vehicle from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. You can choose a nature walk early in the morning, the next day.

DAY 1: 

1:00 pm - Check-in, settle down, and freshen up:

1:30 pm - 2:30 pm - Enjoy a sumptuous lunch:

Guests are treated to a delicious and satisfying lunch. The camp offers a variety of mouthwatering dishes to cater to different tastes and preferences.

4:00 pm - 4:30 pm - Prepare for Safari into the forest after tea/coffee:

After a brief break for tea or coffee, guests get ready for a ride into the park. This could involve pre-safari briefing and boarding the Safari vehicle. 

4:30 pm - 6:30 pm - Accompanied by naturalists, enjoy a wildlife safari in a vehicle.

Led by experienced naturalists, guests have the opportunity to explore the Dubare Forest. You will learn about the jungle ecosystem, spot various animal species, and gain insights into the flora and fauna.

6:30 pm - 7:15 pm - Enjoy tea/coffee served with snacks around a bonfire:

As the evening sets in, guests gather around a bonfire to enjoy a refreshing cup of tea or coffee. Snacks are served, providing a chance to unwind, socialise, and soak in the ambience of the camp.

8:00 pm - 9:30 pm - Relish a delicious dinner:

6:15 am - 6:30 am - Wake-up call:

8:30 am - 9:00 am - Breakfast:

9:00 am - 10:15 am - Elephant camp visit:

During this time, guests have the opportunity to visit the elephant camp. They can observe the elephants up close, participate in activities like bathing and feeding them.

After the elephant camp visit, it is time for guests to check out and conclude their stay. 

Best Time to visit Dubare Elephant Camp 

The Dubare Camp is open all year round. The best time to visit is during the post-monsoon season, which runs from mid-September to the beginning of March.  Take advantage of the nice weather for wildlife safaris, nature walks, and elephant camp visits. Monsoons bring severe rain, but it offers an extraordinary stay at the cottages. The swollen river makes it all the more interesting.
