History of Gopinatham

Gopinatham, the place where Veerappan, the infamous bandit, was born. The village was subjected to significant distress due to Veerappan's unlawful activities, which resulted in the loss of many lives, including those of numerous elephants, policemen, and forest guards. One of the key attractions here is an evening safari drive that leads to a solemn tribute dedicated to P Srinivas, a revered Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer. Srinivas was a tragic casualty of Veerappan's violence in 1991, causing significant shockwaves in these forests, where the notorious bandit wreaked havoc for several years.

The Gopinatham Mystery Trail camp is now managed by the Jungle Lodges and Resorts Ltd., a crucial part of the Department of Tourism of the Government of Karnataka.

 

 

Things to do at Gopinatham Mystery Trails 

Embark on an adventurous Jeep Safari into the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary through the striking landscapes. You will be able to spot many species of birds and wildlife. The safari usually happens in the evening. 

Get a thrill of a coracle ride in the waterbody adjoining the camp. This experience is highly recommended as you gently row across the water, soaking in the serene beauty of nature. It's an excellent way to unwind after an adventurous day. 

After a well-spent evening, you will be shown a wildlife documentary movie that can be enjoyed with other guests as well. 

The next morning, explore the Mystery Trails on foot. Traverse these pathways to discover the secrets of the region, gaining a deeper understanding of its vibrant ecosystems.

Do visit the Hogenakkal Falls which is just 14 Kms from the camp. This is recommended if you plan to stay at the camp for 2 days. It's truly enriching to experience the majestic waterfalls.

You will be accompanied by a naturalist in a guided safari which takes place between 3:30 to 6:00 PM. The jeep safari allows one to spot unique species of birds and wildlife, which is a surreal event. Moreover, the local evening safari offers a unique experience, taking you to the exact location where this respected IFS officer met his untimely end. Srinivas' sacrifice is deeply honoured by the local community, reflecting their resilience and dedication to protecting the sanctuary's integrity against such formidable threats.

What is the best time to visit Mystery Trail Camp?

The best time to visit the camp is during monsoon.  You may find the rainy season magical, with the rich vegetation flourishing in the rains. Summers may be hotter in the tents. The Hogenakkal Falls is best visited post-monsoon when the water level appears to be massive. This makes the coracle ride an adventurous spin. 

 

 

Attractions near the property 

P Srinivas Memorial is dedicated to the IFS officer P Srinivas, who was tortured and killed by Veerappan. It's located within the forest stretch, accessible during the evening Jeep Safari.

It is a hill range located in Hanur taluk, in the Chamarajanagar district, standing at 3,200 feet above sea level.The main attraction is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, where people worship a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva called a linga. It is at a distance of 35 Km from the Gopinatham Camp.

 

 

Hogenakkal Falls is a 3-hour drive from Gopinatham Jungle Lodges Camp. It is referred to as the “Niagara Falls of India”. It's an amazing waterfall with a majestic view.
