Penukonda Fort, located in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, was once the unassailable capital of the early Vijayanagara kingdom. The fort features the impressive Gagan Mahal, a summer retreat for the kings, and the Babayya Darga, a symbol of harmony between Hindu and Muslim communities. The 5-acre Kumbakarna garden houses a colossal sculpture of the sleeping Kumbakarna, standing at 142 feet long and 32 feet tall, with numerous asuras depicted trying to wake up the sleeping Giant. The fort also houses multiple mosques, with the Sher Khan Mosque being the most significant. A historic site with inscriptions dating back to Vira Virupanna Udaiyar's rule, the Penukonda Fort offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Vijayanagar Empire.
