Why is it called Galibore

The Galibore Nature Camp, which is tucked away in the Cauvery River's banks' deciduous woodlands, is the perfect location for a true sense of escape. It is utterly remote from what we would consider civilization and is named after the windy hillock known as Galibore that towers behind it. Here, the wilderness takes on a richer shade of green owing to the surrounding hills.

What is unique or interesting about Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary

The Cauvery Natural Sanctuary, interspread in the taluks that dot three districts of Ramnagar (Kanakapura), Chamrajnagar (Kollegala) and Mandya (Malavalli) of Karnataka, has a contiguous wildlife habitat area of 1027 km. It is a region that includes the ecotourism areas of Hogenakkal Falls, Mekedatu (Goats Leap), Sangam, and the Gopinatham Mystery Trails and the Bheemeshwari Nature Camp (a part of Jungle Lodges and Resorts). The sanctuary is a picturesque retreat where anglers and nature lovers can enjoy the scent of raw adventure and a view of the majestic Cauvery as it bounces over jagged rocks. It is hidden away among mountains, valleys, a big river, jungle sounds, and lush foliage.

Mahseer fish and Cauvery river

The Humpback Mahseer (Tor remadevii) in particular, is a charismatic fish species that is endemic to the Cauvery river, and is on the brink of extinction. It is referred to as the "Tiger of the Cauvery River'' and is ranked among the top 20 freshwater megafauna in the world. The species is IUCN-listed as endangered and requires immediate conservation. The alteration or manipulation of its habitat, over harvesting, and competition from other fish species pose threats to this migratory fish.

These fish are a sportsman's delight in addition to its cultural and religious significance (Mahseer are safeguarded in "temple sanctuaries" around India). They rank among the hardest fighting fresh water sport fish in the subcontinent due to their strength and agility. Hence recreational angling can generate considerable revenue for Mahseer conservation.  Mahseer is an important flagship species because its presence indicates a healthy riverine eco-system. Locals in Karnataka call the Mahseer "Bili Meenu."
