Periyar National Park

About Periyar National Park
The Periyar National Park is also called as Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. It is bounded by Medaganam and Vellimalai in the north and the Kollimalai Peak in the east. The Pamba River valley on the premises is at the lowest altitude of 100 meters. Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over about 925 square kilometres.
Periyar Lake is present at the center of the wildlife sanctuary and the Kottamala Peak is the highest peak in the national park. Other important peaks inside the park are Karimala, Pachayarmala, Chokkampatti mala, Vellimala, and Sunderamala.
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is a protected area and is widely known for its tiger and elephant reserves. The national park and wildlife sanctuary is home to flora and fauna which are not only endangered but also endemic and rare. Along with these, the fact that Periyar River (Kerala’s longest river) drains into this park makes it a favourite spot for travellers around the world.
