Skandagiri: Also known as Kalavaradurga, Skandagiri is located 61 km away from Bangalore. A fortress of peaks, this 8 km trek is at an altitude of 4,750 feet above sea level. It takes about 2 hours to reach the peak and 1.5 hours to climb down. The trek is quite challenging but enthralling and you will come across two mesmerizing caves on the trail and then reach the sunrise point which is the main attraction. It is also ideal for day trips. Beginning from the Papagni Temple, this moderately difficult trek is a top choice for the expert trekker (a novice would be advised to be accompanied by an experienced trekker who is familiar with the trail) Due to some incidents, day and night treks were banned for several years. While the trek has now been reopened, things may have changed so it is better to do some relevant research before embarking on your expedition. Several trekkers who turn up without checking have had to return as the entrance is guarded. Skandagiri is popular for night trekking but it can be risky and not recommended for inexperienced trekkers. There are several organizations which offer sunrise treks early in the morning - ensure that you travel with an experienced guide. If you are going on your own, start early so you can reach the peak to catch the sunrise. Skandagiri is classified as an Eco trail by the Karnataka government so you need to take permission and take a guided tour. As of October 2020, the permissions have been given by the government during the COVID-19 situation.
