About Anejhari Butterfly Camp

When it comes to the wildlife of the forest, we always picture regal tigers gracefully treading down wood trails or elephants lumbering towards their watering holes, tusks held proudly aloft. However, there is another side to the wild untamed beauty of nature and this is what Anejhari Butterfly Camp offers you.

Delicate and softly fluttering, butterflies bring forth a warm glow within us when we sight them. In pop culture, the evolution of a caterpillar to a butterfly is used to denote self-development or a metamorphosis in many stories and self-help books.  Butterflies when they land on green branches are often mistaken for flowers; their colorful wings are similar to blooming petals. These frail creatures also have a short life-span and seeing them during their brief time on earth is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Cradled in the lush green setting of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, the Anejhari Butterfly Camp is adorned with the sweet fragrance of greenery and the gently flowing Souparnika River meandering through the camp property. Located near Kollur, 80 kms from Udupi, the camp gives trekkers the chance to trek to the top of the Kodachadri Peak (the 10th highest peak in Karnataka) which was declared a natural heritage site by the Government of Karnataka. While you trek up to the Kodachadri Peak, you’re treated to the sight of the Malabar langur, Malabar pied hornbill, Indian tiger, Indian leopard, Indian rock python and more…

If you feel like dipping your feet into the ocean, Maravanthe and Byndoor are two beaches located just 35 kms from the camp where you can sun yourself in golden sunshine or build sandcastles on the shore. If you’re looking for somewhere new to trek, you can also head to the lovely Arisinagundi Falls and have a picnic by the waters.

Inside the camp, you can go birding, butterfly watching or take part in some adventure based activities!  As you ramble down the butterfly trail, you get the opportunity to watch butterflies of different hues and colours including the Tamil Lacewing, Plain Puffin, Malabar Tree Nymph, Paris Peacock, Grey Count, Red Helen, and Blue Oak Leaf. Apart from these delicate insects, you’ll also be able to spot the Malabar Giant Squirrel, sambar, wild boar, Indian gaur, peacocks, barking deer and several varieties of other animals.

Bird lovers can take pictures of the Pied Hornbill, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Small Blue Kingfisher, Stork-billed Kingfisher and Asian Paradise Flycatcher. Kids can keep themselves busy playing in the children’s area in the camp!

Head down to this unique jungle lodge and spot the delicate insects of the forest as they flutter from tree-to-tree.
