For nature lovers, the Western Ghats is a shining pearl waiting to be discovered in India. A key biodiversity hotspot, the Ghats are home to different protected sanctuaries and parks teeming with a riotous variety of flora and fauna.
Nestled within the Western Ghats, the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary was first declared a sanctuary in 2011. As a fairly new piece of conserved forest, the sanctuary is not well known and as a result, the wildlife within it thrives in serenity. The mysterious thickets of this region are unique for the Barapede caves, the only known breeding area of the Wroughton’s free-tailed bat, a threatened species on the verge of extinction. A lovely stretch of greenery, the landscape is offset by several rivers and hundreds of perennial streams that snake their way through grassy meadows and rugged gorges.
Located within the premises of the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary, the Hemmadaga Nature Camp brings you up close to the wonders of the Western Ghats. Only 47 km from Belgaum and 22 km from Khanapur, the countryside smoothly transitions from concrete, dusty roads to an emerald oasis as you reach the camp.
Mother Nature is the perfect place to wash your stress and worries away. At the camp, walk through wooded paths lined with tall trees that form outstretched canopies above your head and listen to the sounds of the forest. Make sure to bring your binoculars along to spot the colorful birds and butterflies that adorn the luxuriant forest, flitting in and out of the wide branches. Snuggle up in a cozy tent under the cashew trees and read your favorite book or watch the clouds float by. The misty mornings are a sheer delight, as you wake up to the fluting songs of the Yellow-browed Bulbul and sink into the quiet of nature as it wakes up.
The best part of the Hemmadaga Nature Camp is that you can visit it throughout the year. Each season has something different to offer and apart from peak summer where it can be warm and humid, the camp is a cool, pleasant haven to relax in.
