All you want to know about the Experience
Looking for a beautiful hill station away from the mainstream crowds? In Chikmagalur, Kemmannugundi stands tall and proud, a majestic grassy hill ringed by the mighty Baba Budan Giri Range that is bursting with bubbling mountain streams, lush greenery, azure valley views, and luxuriant ornamental gardens.
Once the summer resort of the erstwhile Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, it is also popularly called the Sri. Krishnarajendra Hill Station. It was later donated to the Karnataka Government, Department of Horticulture and now the hill station is carefully maintained, a lovely summer haven for those looking to escape the heat of the city.
The words, ‘Kempu’, ‘Manu’, and ‘Gundi’ that make up the name of the hill station mean red soil. This is because the hill is comprised of rich red soil that is perfect to grow certain crops, coffee plants, and more! This fertile landscape has given rise to a wealth of luxuriant flora that makes your hikes a magical experience. Kemmannugundi has also earned the monikers ‘Queen of the Hills’ and ‘The Ooty of Karnataka’ because of its gorgeous views and topography. The climate here is cool and pleasant throughout the year, and for trekkers, it’s the best weather for long rambles through the forested trails.
At an elevation of 1,434 meters above sea level, you’re treated to spectacular panoramic views of Chikmagalur. Waking up to a birds-eye view of tall trees with lofty branches, colorful birds singing as they flit from tree to tree and valley after valley of green stretches filled with wildflowers is simply a dream come true.
Trekking in this hill station is its key drawing point. As a bonus, there is no starting point to the trek, you can access it at different points and still treat yourself to gorgeous views. Waterfalls, dams, and flora decorate the trail and you can even walk up to the sunrise or sunset vantage point and watch the sun turn the sky into different shades of vibrant colour.
One of the wonderful spots that you’ll find during your trek is the iconic Z Point. Located through the Mullayanagiri Range, you can hop on a jeep tour or take a hike to the waterfalls and enjoy a picnic near the cascading waters. You can also head to the famous Rose Garden. Maintained by the Horticulture Department of Karnataka, many varieties of these showy blooms grow here and are a sheer delight for visitors. Cozy up in the spacious cottages at the hill resort and spend a peaceful holiday in this quiet yet beautiful summer vacation spot.
