There’s nothing like taking a break from the fast-paced lifestyle of the city filled with constant Zoom calls and household responsibilities, and making your way to a spot where nature blossoms in the wild. The Sahyadris, a massive mountain range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the eight hotspots of biological diversity in the world. A treasure trove of wildlife and natural bounties, its verdant valleys, gushing rivers, emerald grasslands and stretches of forests create an atmosphere of a time before civilization, when fauna roamed through the earth freely.
During the monsoons, the Sahyadris come to life, with new life around every corner, from trees that sprout fresh green shoots to rivers with swollen bellies of water and fish. The River Sharavathi plummets from a dizzying height of 830 ft, creating Jog Falls, one of India’s tallest waterfalls. The monsoon season is the best time to view these spectacular falls as it gushes down in four unique cascades, the Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer.
Situated just 6 kms from this natural marvel, the Sharavathi Adventure Camp is the perfect combination of the grandeur of majestic mountains, greenery and streams. Cradled by the slopes of a hillock skirting the Talakalale Reservoir, the camp is drenched in sunshine and gentle drizzles of rain, giving birth to a plethora of flora that creates a cooling ambience for you to relax in. During the monsoon season, the weather is great for long rambles in the outdoors. You can spot the colourful avian wildlife or enjoy the simplicity of the countryside as it quietly slumbers away from the city.
Take a walk around the camp and follow a fluttering trail of butterflies as they flit from blossom to blossom in the forest. Love watersports? Glide down the blue waters of the reservoir in a coracle boat or kayak and watch the clouds that drift above you. You can also fish in the reservoir, hauling in your catch and asking the in-house restaurant to prepare it for you at extra cost. The resort and its surrounding islands are home to a variety of winged visitors such as Kingfishers, Indian peafowl, Hoopoes, Hornbills, Pond herons, Grey headed bulbuls and Cormorants. You can also spot the Black-naped hare, Common langurs and Malabar giant squirrels on your nature walks and capture pictures of these beautiful beasts for posterity.
As evening falls, you can sip a frothy cup of tea or coffee at the water’s edge as you watch the sky turn delicate flames of pink, crimson, orange and mustard. This is when you relax and unwind totally, sinking into the silence of the glorious mountains around you.
