Overview

Located at the junction of the Ganga and Jalangi rivers, Mayapur is a serene city known for its breathtaking views and numerous temples, making it an ideal destination for spiritual seekers. This Vaishnavite pilgrim center was established by Bhakti saint Vinod Thakur and is believed to be the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, an incarnation of Lord Krishna, in the year 1486 AD. Mayapur is renowned for its Chandrodaya Temple, the first temple established by ISKCON in the area, as well as the Samadhi of Prabhupada, dedicated to the founder of ISKCON, and the Shree Chaitanyamath, which marks the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Situated on the banks of the Hooghly river and Jalangi confluence, Mayapur holds religious significance as one of the nine dhams of the nine holy islands, collectively known as Navadwipa. These islands, centered on Antardvipa (Mayapur), form part of Mayapur Township and are a hub of approximately 185 temples. Notably, Navadvipa is a temple town where Shaiva, Vaishnava, and Buddhist beliefs converge harmoniously.
