Overview

Pattadakal is a hidden gem, adorned with ancient Hindu and Jain temples, and is a crucial part of the Aihole-Badami-Pattadakal complex, honored with the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage title. Nestled along the serene banks of River Malaprabha, this town boasts a rich history dating back to the 4th century, when it was known as Raktapura and was under the rule of the Badami Chalukyas. The Hindu temples here beautifully blend North and South Indian architectural styles and were constructed in the 9th century by the Rashtrakuta Dynasty. Additionally, the Jain Temple, a newer addition to this historic region, was built by Queen Lokamahadevi. Notably, the magnificent Virupaksha Temple, a fine example of South Indian architecture, was commissioned by Queen Lokamahadevi, the wife of Vikramaditya II. Pattadakal's temples, including the Jain temple, Papanatha temple, Galaganath temple, and Sangameshwara temple, are the heart of this town and are a must-visit. The town also comes alive in January with a classical dance festival, offering a glimpse into the authentic culture and traditions of the region. Beyond its historical and cultural significance, Pattadakal is also renowned for its delectable local cuisine.
