Things To do in Belgaum

Overview

Constructed in the 13th century by the Ratta dynasty rulers, the Belgaum Fort is one of the oldest forts in Karnataka. Recently honored as a 'state heritage monument' by the state of Karnataka, it served as an impenetrable barricade against violent attacks. Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned here during the Freedom Movement of India. The fort features an adjoining lake, known as the Fort Lake, with a Floating Cafeteria. Visitors can enjoy pedal boats and motorboats in the well-maintained surroundings. The fort has a rich history, having been host to numerous dynasties and undergoing several renovations. It was constructed after demolishing 108 Jain temples and 101 Shiva temples, with some of the stones and pillars from these religious shrines incorporated into structures within the fort, such as the Jamia Masjid.
