Overview

Perched on the Nilachal Hills in the western part of Guwahati, Assam, the Kamakhya Temple is a revered pilgrimage site dedicated to the mother Goddess Kamakhya. It is the main temple complex of the ten Mahavidyas devoted to Shaktism, celebrating the power of the woman to give birth. This ancient temple, built and reconstructed between the 8th and 17th centuries, is one of the four important Shakti Peethas in India. The main entrance is adorned with elegant carvings and colorful flowers, leading to the massive dome that offers a breathtaking view of the Nilanchal Hills. The temple comes alive during the Ambubachi Festival, a vibrant celebration held for 3-4 days in June.
