BR Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Biligiri Rangana Betta or Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary, was established in June 1974 near the BR Temple. Initially spanning 322 square kilometers, its area expanded in 1987 to 534 square kilometers. Strategically located, it forms an essential link between the Western and Eastern Ghats, facilitating the exchange of genetic diversity between their diverse plant and animal species.
The sanctuary is home to large populations of wild elephants and tigers, as well as gaur, dhole, giant flying squirrel, and the endangered four-horned antelope. BR Hills is a critical wildlife corridor and biodiversity hotspot in Karnataka, known for its stunning natural beauty and cultural significance. The Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple within the sanctuary is a major attraction for devotees. Its accessibility from cities like Bangalore and Mysore makes BR Hills a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
