About BR Hills

BR Hills, one of Karnataka's Tiger Reserves, holds the distinction of being one of the oldest forests in the region. Initially declared a protected area in 1974 under the Wildlife Act, it gained Tiger Reserve status in 2011. The hills' diverse habitats support a wide range of wildlife, encompassing species from scrub forests, dryer regions, and even those endemic to the wet forests of the Western Ghats. Hosting nearly 270 bird species, recent surveys by birdwatchers and scientists have expanded the known list of birds in BR Hills. The variety of habitats is evident in the different types of birds found in these forests. A drive along the sole road from the north to the south of the sanctuary offers a journey through various forest types within this reserve.
