It is believed that Sitadevi lived in Avani and gave birth to Lava and Kusha in an ashram here. The room she gave birth in still exists. Hence, the temple is visited by thousands of childless couples throughout the year.

According to the local beliefs, childless women take bath in the Lakshmana Thirtha, go to the temple in wet clothes with coconut and essential pooja ingredients. Then, they have to sleep inside the temple and dream about Goddess Sita indicating the blessings to fulfil their wishes.

6. Someshwara Temple

Set on the banks of Ulsoor Lake, the Someshwara Temple dates back to the reign of the Chola Dynasty. The Temple was renovated by Kempe Gowda in the 16th century and has one of the most impressive historic architectures of all times. Gigantic Gopurams were also added during the renovation. The intricately carved walls and pillars of this temple reflect many folk tales of the past.

Folklores describe a legend behind the consecration of this temple but there are two versions of it. According to the first version, one day Kempe Gowda, while on a hunt, rested under a tree and fell asleep. Someshwara – the local deity, appeared to him in his dream and instructed him to find a buried treasure to build a temple in his honour. He also promised to bestow divine favour to Kempe Gowda in return. Hence, the chieftain found the treasure and obediently constructed the temple.

However, another version declares that King Jayappa Gowda fell asleep under a tree and saw a man appearing before him in his dream. The man instructed him to retrieve a “Linga” that was buried under the spot where he was sleeping and build a temple. Following the instructions, Jayappa initially built the temple out of wood and found the treasure.
