Mekedatu Falls - Your Ultimate Guide to a Thrilling Adventure

Situated at the confluence of the rivers Kavery and Arkavathi is a place called the Sangama, located about 93 kilometres from Bengaluru. Approximately 3.5 km away from the Sangama amidst the picturesque landscape runs a deep gorge forming waterfalls. This place is known as Mekedatu and is surrounded by beautiful rocky terrains and luscious forests which is home to various species of flora and fauna. The place offers a panoramic view of the beautiful surrounding landscapes.

The deep gorge and the sparkling river which flows through the jutting rocks is a magnificent view. Over the millennia, the river has carved unique patterns into the gorge creating natural art. However, the banks are quite slippery and may be dangerous.

Sangama Mekedatu is the perfect place for trekkers and bikers alike. People enjoy picnics on the banks of the river. However, the currents are strong and hence it is advisable not to swim in the river.

Behind the Name Mekedatu

In Kannada, Mekedatu means “Goat’s Leap”. According to the legends, once there was a goat being chased by a tiger. While running, the goat came to this end, where, to save itself, it leapt across the gorge. The tiger was not willing to take the risk, and hence, turned back. The locals here believe that the ‘goat’ in the story was none other than Lord Shiva. Legend has it that the two hoof-shaped dents on the earth there are the prints left by this goat.
